The White Whale has a zipper (or Two Hour Floor Cushions)

So!  After over a week staring at the fabric and going back and forth to the tutorial, I finally buckled down and did it.  And you know what, once I got started it was so much easier than I thought.  I even got so cocky after making the first one, that I decided to add a zipper in the second.  This is a big deal for a couple of reasons: 1. I don't know jack about zippers.  I seriously didn't have a clue what I was doing ... I may as well have done it with my eyes closed.  But of course I didn't because I clearly remember that Hallmark TV movie "Love is Never Silent" that my second grade teacher made us watch a million times and Mare Winingham's mom's friend getting the needle in her finger.  No thank you! and 2. I had run out of stuffing and I reeeeeally wanted to finish them without having to make another trip to the fabric store.  Once I put the zipper on, I was free to stuff it with clothes from the "sentimental-but-no-cash-value" box!  I realized that all clothes would make it too heavy so I did a mix of guest room extra pillows to lighten it up a bit.

The junior folks love them and have been lugging them around all day.  (My son just walked in and said that he was alternating between sitting on it and using it as an ottoman, but that "I will definitely be sitting on it for movie night.")

I cannot stress how well done the tutorial is.  I only veered from it slightly:
1. The Zipper: instead of leaving an opening in the penultimate step, I just opened the zipper and sewed it on each side (makes so much sense when you do it).
2. Made the circle A LOT bigger: 26" diameter.   That translates into a much longer rectangle too (I'll spare you digging up the calculator... about 83 (with seam allowance)
And I know you are all wondering where I found this lovely VonTrapp-esque fabric... IKEA!  Who know?  (All of you?  Really?  Why didn't you tell me?).   The selection is fantastic and the price (sorry Mama, I know it's crass) is just over $5/meter!  And you can't see it in the picture, but this is thick cotton upolstery-grade fabric.
And finally, because I'm just feeling so celebratory, I'd like to say a big HELLO to whoever stopped by from the Faroe Islands.  I love seeing where my blog traffic is coming from and though I appreciate visitors from all over the world (I really do), Faroe Islands made my jaw drop.  Why?  Because I couldn't believe that there was this part of the world that I had never heard of.  I googled pictures of it and have now put it on my someday wishlist of travel.
Isn't it lovely?  It looks like a movie set!

  1. Ugh, I'm so jealous. Those are so friggin' adorable. I've had that tutorial in my "ideas to try" file with absolutely no intention of ever trying because I know I would butcher it so bad. Good job girl.

No, no, no. That's exactly why I made them and posted them. It wasn't just to boast (although, ahem, ahem, they are really cute), but to prove that if I can do it, ANYBODY can do it...seriously!
