Vellum Luminaries

Real Simple featured a similar idea in their "New Uses for Old Things" section using parchment paper and decoratively punched holes.
James Wojcik

I wanted something a bit sturdier and hopefully longer lasting, so, using vellum, I put together this:

You can buy vellum in 8.5x11 sheets at any craft or printing store.
Print out your message on landscape view.
Adhere the ends together and you're done.  I suggest stapling or some other heat-resistant adhesive.
To make it a little sturdier, I added a rolled up piece of parchment paper cut to size on the inside.

To keep it safe, I use a tiny tea light in a much larger candle-holder.  And there you have it, custom made luminaries!  You can use these for the holidays, birthdays, wedding favors ... imagine making tiny ones with your guests' names and using them instead of placecards at a formal dinner.  Perhaps even print table numbers on them at a wedding.

  1. I should add that the designs were made using wingding fonts that you can get free online. Have fun with this and let me know how it turns out!

  2. This is a great idea! I have a flameless tall candle from airwick & this would be perfect to add personality to it. Thanks for sharing!

So glad you liked it. Flameless candles would definitely be much safer.

Craft stores have vellum tape, but you could also use regular scotch tape (cellotape outside of North America) or staples.
    Good luck!

  8. HI THERE, CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT IS "LANDSCAPE VIEW"? SORRY IF I SOUND SO IGNORANT.

Nothing ignorant about it! It just means that under the "page setup" option, you choose landscape as opposed to portrait. Does that help? (Horizontal alignment vs. vertical alignment)
